Before your first session, questions people ask before they walk in
Short answers, in order of how often they come up. If yours is not here, call (913) 206-7645 and ask a person.
Where in Leawood is the studio?
The studio is at 5328 W 151st St, Leawood, KS 66224, in southern Leawood near the Mission Road and 151st Street area. It is a private studio, not a storefront gym, so look for the His & Her Fitness sign on the building rather than a row of treadmills in a window.
What are your hours?
- Monday to Thursday: 5am to 7pm
- Friday: 5am to 5pm
- Saturday: 7am to 3pm
- Sunday: 7:30am to 10:30am
Sessions are scheduled, so the floor is rarely full at any hour. If you need to train earlier than the posted opening, ask; earlier starts are sometimes possible.
Do you have showers and locker rooms?
The studio has four private bathrooms, including showers.
Do I need to bring a towel or water?
Towels are here, including cooling towels for after your workout. Bring a water bottle: Christina's rule is to always have one with you.
Can I start if I have an old injury or a medical condition?
Usually yes, and the first session is where you say so. Your trainer asks about injuries and conditions before you lift anything and builds around them; clients have trained here before and after knee replacement and with conditions they manage daily. Where a doctor's clearance is needed, the studio will say so rather than guess.
How soon can I start?
Most people have their first session within the same week they call. The first visit is a measurement and a conversation, then a workout built for where you are; the plan follows from there. There is no enrollment period and no class start date to wait for.
Are the trainers staff or independent contractors?
Staff. Every trainer at His & Her Fitness is a W-2 employee of the studio; there are no contract trainers renting the floor. That is why your plan and your measurements belong to the studio rather than to one person, and why another trainer can pick up exactly where yours left off.
Do you offer nutrition or meal planning?
Yes, and it is not a diet. Meal planning here means real food, cooked at home. As Christina puts it: "If you diet, you'll die." Clients get a meal plan with their training and access to a library of more than 170 recipes written the Fitness Way, behind a client password.
Can I see the recipes without being a client?
The newest recipe is always public, so you can see what the Fitness Way means. The rest of the library, more than 170 recipes and twenty years of cooking, is for current clients and opens with a password your trainer gives you. Christina is putting the collection into a cookbook.
How does the Creative Cardio video subscription work?
Send the form on the Creative Cardio page and choose "Online," and the studio will get back to you with the details.
Do you train from Overland Park, or just Leawood?
Clients drive in from across Johnson County and the Missouri side, including Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Mission and Raymore. The studio is in Leawood and all training happens there; there is one location, on purpose. Areas clients come from
Do you train kids or teenagers?
Yes, with a parent involved. Christina has trained clients who started at twelve and were still training in college. Sessions for teens are one-on-one or tandem with a parent, built for growing bodies rather than scaled down from adult programs.
Christina's top questions, in her words
How do I build lean muscle without bulking?
Lifting won't bulk you up by accident. Men carry far more testosterone than women, so for most women weights mean firmer, leaner muscle, not size. What decides whether you build, tone or firm is what you eat: the right balance of protein, carbohydrates and fiber. Lift at least twice a week to keep the muscle you have, and add a third session when you can to grow more. Lean muscle burns more fat at rest and protects your bones and joints, and you'll lose inches along the way. Too much cardio works against you: your body starts burning muscle instead of fat. Fit, not skinny.
Does the meal plan address gut health?
Every meal needs protein, fiber and a starch. Get the balance wrong and you'll feel it for a day or two: tired, hungry or bloated. Your body can only digest so much protein at one sitting, so smaller meals through the day beat a few big ones. Water and fiber do a lot of the work, and look for soluble fiber, not just the word "fiber" on a label. Once you've eaten clean for a while, your stomach will tell you when you've cheated.
How do I balance training with work and kids?
Parents spend the week centered on everyone else, so start each Sunday by looking at the week and mapping out time for you. Plan and prep meals with the whole family, and don't pick at the kids' food. If you work long days, know where you'll eat lunch and ask your trainer how to eat well at each place. Prep only what you'll eat that week, on the same day or two each week, and eat every three hours. Most of all, tell us what's happening outside the studio: a new baby, a new job or a stressful stretch changes your plan, and we change your workouts to match.
What does recovery look like here?
Recovery starts with listening to your body. Sleep, water and clean food decide how hard you can train: when you're rested and hydrated, we train you at your max, and when you've been traveling, short on sleep or under stress, we make the session lighter. Lifting heavy when you're not at your best only invites injury, and overtraining shows up as late-night cravings. Pace your training so your muscles rebuild as fast as they break down, eat clean so they can repair, and try to wake up at the same time every day. Sauna and massage
Her short version, for all of them: "We are the gym that historically sees results and keeps it off, so making it a lifestyle change."
Is there a second location?
No. The studio in Leawood is the only location. If you can't get here, you can train live and virtually instead: one-on-one, tandem or group. You set up your phone, tablet or computer where your trainer can see you, and they watch your form and coach every exercise live. Call (913) 206-7645 or send a message to ask how it works.
